Welcome to  AIRE!

Are you interested in decreasing pollution in your home?

AIRE, or Active Intervention to Reduce Exposures, is an environmental health study at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health. The goal of the study is to better understand how indoor air quality measurements and education can help residents reduce air pollution in their home. We are looking for people who:

✅Live in Dorchester or Hyde Park, MA

✅Are at least 18 years old

✅Have and are able to use a smartphone

If you are willing and able to participate in this study, a small air pollution monitor will be placed in your home for at least 6-7 weeks. The monitor looks like this:

You will also be randomly placed into one of three groups:

Group A: passive education only

  • Air quality monitor will be set up in the home, but the participant WILL NOT see monitor feedback.

  • Participant will receive written air pollution-related educational materials.

Group B: passive education and air pollution monitor feedback

  • Air quality monitor will be set up in the home and the participant WILL see monitor feedback. This means the participant will be able to see what the level of Particulate Matter (PM2.5) is in their home at any time of day.

  • Participant will receive written air pollution-related educational materials.

Group C: active education and air pollution monitor feedback

  • Air quality monitor will be set up in the home and the participant WILL see air pollution monitor feedback. This means the participant will be able to see what the level of Particulate Matter (PM2.5) is in their home at any time of day.

  • Participant will receive written air pollution-related educational materials.

  • Participant can take part in a home health assessment (includes a guided tour of your kitchen and living room) to discuss specific suggestions about reducing air pollution in your home.

Your group assignment determines when you will receive education during the study. However, no matter your group placement, you will learn how you can decrease air pollution exposure within your home.

If you participate in this study, our research team will visit your home at least 4 times over 6-7 weeks. Participants will be asked to answer questions about their home, health and behaviors, allow us to set up air quality monitors in their home, use a smartphone app to inventory products used regularly, and participate in educational activities including a home health assessment and use a smartphone app that offers recommendations for reducing chemical exposures and home-based hazards. We estimate visit time as follows:

Visit 1 = about 30 minutes

Visit 2 = between 1-2 hours (depending on group)

Visit 3 = about 30 minutes

Visit 4 = about 45 minutes

Visit 5 = about 5 minutes (optional)

A fifth home visit is optional. Participants will be asked to leave the air quality monitor in their home for an additional 6 months. The purpose of this additional step is: 1) to gather long-term data on air quality in participant homes, and 2) to check the ability of the air monitor to successfully gather long-term data.

Participants will receive up to $100 in gift cards!

  • $50 gift card at completion of visit 2

  • $50 gift card at completion of visit 4
